Velvet has always had a bit of a reputation. Rich. Dramatic. A little bit extra. But if you ask us, that’s exactly what makes it magic.
Once reserved for royalty and theatre stages, velvet has made its way into everyday homes, and nowhere does it shine more than on your windows.
Soft, plush and seriously luxurious, velvet curtains are a tactile treat and a practical choice for Sydney homes, especially as the temperatures drop.
Here’s why we love them, and why you might, too.
Fabric with serious history
Velvet has been around for centuries, first made by hand from silk, traded along ancient routes, and worn by the rich and powerful.
Fast forward to today, and while most velvets are now made from cotton or synthetics, that sense of depth and richness still lingers.
Whether it’s framing a window, softening a space or keeping the chill out, velvet is one of those fabrics that still feels special.
Where velvet really shines
From light-filled Sydney beachside pad to character-laden inner west terrace, velvet curtains do more than look good:
- Help with insulation and soundproofing
- Block light beautifully for bedrooms and media rooms
- Add softness, texture and weight to airy or minimalist spaces
Thanks to advances in fabric design, today’s velvets are easier to live with than ever. Many are crush-resistant, washable or even kid- and pet-friendly (yes, really).
Velvet picks we love right now
We work with some of the best fabric houses in Australia, and their velvet ranges are dreamy. A few favourites (pictured throughout this article):
Caspian: Woven as a chenille triple weave, its subtle sheen catches the light with every fold. We love it for its rich, grounded palette. Think chocolate, ruby, copper, sapphire and emerald – ideal for interiors where texture matters.
Monarque: A luxurious viscose velvet with a soft, dense pile and a fluid, silk-like drape, designed to emulate the richness of traditional silk velvet. We love its romantic, heritage feel, perfect for layered, maximalist interiors.
Theodora: This European-quality velvet has a soft, short-pile finish and subtle sheen. It’s a dual-purpose fabric that balances refined texture with everyday durability. We love its flexible, era-spanning colour palette, with 35 shades.
Velvelux: This sustainable velvet is woven from recycled polyester and finished for a soft, natural hand-feel. We love its luxurious feel and well-balanced palette, where rich jewel tones pair with soft pastels, neutrals and signature greens.
Each velvet has its own personality, and we’ve got samples ready for you to see and feel in person.
How to care for velvet curtains
Velvet doesn’t need to be high maintenance, but a little care goes a long way.
Daily-ish:
- Gently vacuum with a soft brush head
- Shake out any dust near open windows
- Rotate curtain panels if the sun hits one side more than the other
Every now and then:
- Most lined or natural fibre velvets should be dry cleaned
- Synthetic or performance velvets can sometimes be spot cleaned—always check first
- Never iron directly on velvet. Steam instead, or iron through a clean towel from the reverse side
When in doubt, ask us. We know our velvets inside and out.
Whether you’re after deep jewel tones, earthy neutrals or a soft silver grey, we’ve got options to suit every room, and every mood.
